Orthodontic relapse — the partial or total return of teeth to their original position after treatment — is more common than people think. It affects both former brace wearers and those who had aligners. Here is why it happens and how to prevent it.

Teeth are not rigidly fixed in the bone: they are held by elastic periodontal ligaments. After an orthodontic movement, these ligaments take several months to reorganise around the new position. During this period — and sometimes beyond — teeth tend to "want" to return to their original location. Without retention, relapse is almost inevitable.
