3D Smile Simulation: How It Works and What to Expect

The 3D smile simulation is one of the most significant innovations in modern orthodontics. Before wearing your first aligner, you can see your final smile on a screen. Here is how it works and what you can expect.

It all starts with a digital impression of your teeth taken with an intraoral scanner — a small pen-shaped device the dentist slides into your mouth for 3 to 5 minutes. This scanner captures thousands of 3D points to create a perfectly accurate digital model of your teeth, with no physical impression material.

The 3D model is sent to Infinity Aligner laboratories, where specialist orthodontic technicians plan every tooth movement: inclination, rotation, extrusion, translation. Each stage of treatment is calculated to a tenth of a millimetre. The result is an animated sequence showing the progression tooth by tooth, from your current situation to the final smile.

Your dentist presents the simulation at a dedicated appointment. You see your current smile, each intermediate stage and the final result. You can request adjustments — for example, closing a gap further or leaving certain teeth unchanged. The plan is only validated with your agreement. Only after this validation does manufacturing of the aligners begin.
