Closing a Gap Between Your Teeth with Clear Aligners

A gap between the front teeth — dentists call it a diastema — is one of the most common reasons people look into clear aligners. For some it's a signature look; for others it's something they've wanted to fix for years. Most gaps close predictably with aligners. The key is understanding why the gap is there in the first place.

• Tooth size: teeth that are small relative to the jaw leave extra room.
• A large labial frenum: the band of tissue between the upper lip and the gum can extend between the front teeth and hold them apart.
• Missing or undersized teeth, such as small lateral incisors.
• Habits like tongue thrusting, which push the front teeth forward over time.
• Gum disease: in adults, a gap that suddenly appears or grows can be a sign of bone loss around the teeth.

That last cause matters most. If a gap has recently appeared or widened, see your dentist for a gum evaluation before anything else.

Each set of aligners is shaped to bring the teeth a small step closer together. For a gap between the two front teeth, the neighboring teeth are often moved as a group so the smile stays balanced, rather than simply pulling two teeth toward each other. Small attachments may be added to help the trays grip.

Gaps have a strong tendency to reopen, especially when a frenum or tongue habit contributed to them. Retention isn't optional here. Many providers recommend a bonded wire behind the front teeth, a clear retainer worn every night, or both.
