Choosing an Intraoral Scanner for Aligner Work: A Buyer's Checklist

What to evaluate before buying an intraoral scanner for a practice offering clear aligners: open file export, full-arch accuracy, speed, ergonomics, software fees, support and total cost.

Choosing an Intraoral Scanner for Aligner Work: A Buyer's Checklist

An intraoral scanner is one of the larger technology investments a practice makes, and aligner treatment is one of the workflows that benefits most from it. Rather than comparing brand names, it helps to evaluate scanners against the criteria that matter for aligner work and for your practice as a whole.

1. Open file export

Check that the scanner exports standard files, such as STL, that you can send to any lab or aligner manufacturer. Some systems favor their own ecosystem or charge for export. Open export keeps your options open.

2. Full-arch accuracy

Aligners depend on accurate full-arch models. Ask for independent data on full-arch trueness and precision rather than single-tooth figures, and scan a full arch yourself during a demo.

3. Speed and ease of use

  • How long does a complete scan of both arches and the bite take in trained hands?
  • How easily does it recover after interruptions or missed areas?
  • Can assistants learn it quickly enough to take scans independently?

4. Ergonomics and patient comfort

  • Wand size and weight, especially for scanning distal molars
  • Whether the scanner requires powder
  • Cart, laptop or chairside mounting options that fit your operatories

5. Software and ongoing fees

Ask about subscriptions, software updates, cloud storage and support contracts. Ongoing fees can change the true cost of ownership significantly over several years.

6. Infection control

Check how tips are sterilized or disposed of, how many tips are included and what replacements cost.

7. Features that support aligner treatment

  • Color scanning for clearer margins and patient education
  • Smile simulation or case presentation tools
  • Progress comparison between scans over time

8. Training and support

Look for on-site or virtual training, local support availability and response times for repairs or replacement units.
