How to Clean and Care for Your Clear Aligners Daily

Poorly maintained aligners show, smell and lose effectiveness. Yet caring for your clear aligners only takes a few minutes a day. Here is the daily routine recommended by certified Infinity Aligner dentists.

• 1. Rinse your aligners with cold water as soon as you remove them (never hot water — it warps the plastic)
• 2. Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and neutral soap (no abrasive toothpaste)
• 3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water before putting them back in
• 4. Never let them air dry without rinsing — bacteria multiply quickly
• 5. Store them in their airtight case when not wearing them

For a thorough clean, soak your aligners for 15 to 20 minutes in a solution of lukewarm water with an orthodontic effervescent tablet (Retainer Brite, Steraligner or equivalent). You can also use diluted white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water). Avoid concentrated hydrogen peroxide, which can degrade the plastic over time.

• Rinsing or soaking in hot water (immediate warping)
• Using toothpaste (abrasive — scratches the surface and promotes tartar build-up)
• Leaving them in a paper napkin (they end up in the bin)
• Eating with aligners in (even soft foods — they crack and stain)
• Drinking anything other than water while wearing aligners (sugar + heat = accelerated cavities)
