Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt? Managing Discomfort with Braces and Aligners

What orthodontic discomfort really feels like with braces and clear aligners, how long it lasts, and practical ways to stay comfortable throughout treatment.

Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt? Managing Discomfort with Braces and Aligners

Fear of pain keeps many people from starting orthodontic treatment. The reality for most patients is manageable pressure rather than pain, concentrated in the first few days after each change. Here's what to expect and how to make it easier.

Why teeth feel sore

Moving a tooth creates pressure on the ligament and bone around it, and the body responds with mild inflammation that lets the bone remodel. That's the same process that allows teeth to move, so some tenderness is a sign treatment is working.

Braces vs. aligners: how it compares

What it feels likeAching teeth; brackets and wires can rub cheeks and lipsTight pressure; tray edges may feel sharp at first
Soft tissue irritationCommon at first, can recur with new wiresUsually minor, mostly from attachments or rough edges

How to stay comfortable

  • Eat softer foods for the first days after a change — soups, eggs, pasta, yogurt, smoothies.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label if needed.
  • Cover rough brackets or attachments with orthodontic wax.
  • Rinse with warm salt water to soothe sore spots.
  • With aligners, switch to a new set at bedtime so you sleep through the tightest hours.

What's not normal

  • Sharp pain in one tooth that doesn't fade after several days
  • Pain when biting on a single tooth
  • Swelling, fever or a sore that won't heal
  • Jaw joint pain, locking or clicking that's new

Call your provider if you notice any of these; they're not typical and should be checked.

It gets easier

Most patients say discomfort is most noticeable at the very start and becomes a brief, predictable routine after that. An Infinity Aligner certified provider can walk you through what to expect and help you plan around the first days of each new set.
